The Daily Double Part 9
Kitty pursues the impostor to the train station. The Long Island Express is due any minute; that may be the impostor's destination. But the Long Island Railroad is never on time; would a G.R.O.U.T. agent really depend on the train as an escape mechanism? Perhaps, if that agent knew she would not be followed. After all, the impostor isn't quite being followed right now: Kitty has lost sight of her! And for all Kitty knows, the impostor could already have made a rendez-vous with a getaway car! Or, knowing G.R.O.U.T. and their penchant for elaborate plans, perhaps the fake Kitty has a motor-scooter waiting at the train station, so anyone following her would assume she was catching a train while she was actually escaping by road. Whatever the plan, though, the train station is the next crucial stop for the impostor. Kitty must catch up before it is too late!
And who is this impostor, anyway? Kitty has racked her brain to think of female G.R.O.U.T. agents who might take on this assignment, but she draws a blank. A plot to make Teabiscuit lose the Belmont Stakes and the Triple Crown is something worthy of Flossie Lemongello, Kitty's best friend from finishing school who had turned against Kitty after an unfortunate accident that cost Flossie an eye and twisted her brilliant mind toward evil. But even G.R.O.U.T. thought Flossie was too unstable to join their ranks.

No, it could not be Flossie, but someone who thought like her: egotistical, vindictive and somewhat childish. The one certainty in this tangled web of intrigue is that Kitty must use all caution in tracking down the imposter!

Aha! A stroke of luck; Kitty spots the impostor on the platform, waiting for the train! So it is unlikely that the impostor knew Kitty was at Belmont this afternoon. But Kitty cannot assume that. It is possible the impostor knows Kitty is following her and is leading her into a trap. The impostor's plan obviously depended on Kitty being detained in Mexico City, but any good agent on a mission expects the unexpected. Kitty had unexpectedly arrived at Belmont Park; could the impostor have spotted her? Kitty was at a disadvantage from the start; thinking this day was purely an occasion for family business, she had not expected to find a nefarious G.R.O.U.T. plan afoot and was therefore not on the alert until it was almost too late. Now Kitty appears to have the element of surprise in her favor. She hopes this fake Kitty is not armed. Judging from the impostor's apparent plan for today, Kitty sees no reason why she should have a gun, but one can never be sure....
Carefully, catlike, Kitty stalks her impersonator...
